About Weapon Cases

You receive cases for free as weekly drops by playing on official servers, but opening one requires a key bought from the Steam Community Market or store. The case stays in your inventory until keyed; the contents and odds are locked to that specific case, so an opened case is a fixed gamble against a published probability table.

The economy splits cases into two groups. Most are uncapped — Valve keeps printing them as long as people play, so they stay cheap on the Market. A handful were discontinued (removed from the active drop pool) and only shrink in supply, which is why containers like the original 2013 cases trade for far more than a fresh release. Understanding which group a case belongs to, and what its rare item slot can produce, is the difference between opening for fun and buying a case as an asset.

Prices range from $0.084 (Sealed Genesis Terminal) to $476.57 (Audience Participation Parcel).

How cases drop and how keys work

Cases are part of the weekly drop system. After completing matches on Valve official servers you accrue XP toward a rank-up drop, which can be a case, a graffiti, or a weapon skin from the active drop pool. Cases received this way are uncapped and tradable. To open one you need its key; in CS2 every standard case shares the same generic key priced at $2.49 in the in-game store, and most older keys were unified so a single key type opens current cases. Keys bought from the store are not tradable or Market-sellable, so flippers buy keys (or pre-keyed cases) on the Steam Community Market instead. Opening is irreversible and the result is rolled against the case's odds at the moment of unboxing.

Rarity tiers and the real odds

Each case lists items by rarity color: Mil-Spec (blue), Restricted (purple), Classified (pink), Covert (red), and the special Rare item (gold — a knife, or gloves in glove cases). Valve publishes the official consumer-grade-equivalent odds: roughly 79.92% Mil-Spec, 15.98% Restricted, 3.2% Classified, 0.64% Covert, and about 0.26% for the gold rare-special slot. Every skin then rolls a wear (float) and has roughly a 10% chance to be StatTrak (souvenir cases differ — see below). Because the knife/glove odds are so low and the special slot itself contains multiple knife models and finishes, pulling a specific high-value knife is a compounding long shot. The expected market value of opening a typical case is below the combined cost of case plus key, which is the structural house edge.

Case types: weapon, glove, souvenir, and discontinued

Most cases are weapon cases whose gold slot yields a knife. Glove cases (Glove Case, Operation Hydra, Clutch, Danger Zone, Fracture, Snakebite, etc. — the ones flagged as glove collections) replace the knife slot with gloves. Souvenir packages are different animals: they drop to viewers during official Majors, can't be bought from the store as standard cases, and every item carries a tournament sticker and team/MVP context rather than StatTrak. Discontinued cases (CS:GO Weapon Case, eSports 2013, Operation Bravo, and other early containers) were pulled from the drop pool; their supply only declines, so prices climb over time and they behave like collectibles rather than consumables.

Which cases hold value vs. open for fun

Uncapped, currently-dropping cases trade for cents because supply refreshes weekly — these are pure lottery tickets, fine to open but poor to hold. Value lives in scarcity: discontinued cases, and cases containing a meta knife model (Karambit, M9 Bayonet, Butterfly) or a chase Covert skin that drives opener demand. The cheapest way to obtain a case is to simply play and collect weekly drops; the cheapest way to obtain the skin you actually want is almost always to buy that skin directly on the Market rather than open for it. Hold cases only if you believe Valve will discontinue the line or the contained items keep appreciating.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get CS2 cases for free?
Play on Valve official servers and earn XP. Periodic rank-up drops can award a case from the active drop pool at no cost. These cases are tradable and Market-sellable, but you still need a key to open them.
How much does a key cost and is it tradable?
A key costs $2.49 in the in-game store and opens current standard cases. Keys purchased from the store are not tradable or Market-sellable. If you need a tradable key, you must buy one on the Steam Community Market.
What are the actual odds of getting a knife or gloves?
The gold rare-special slot — knives in weapon cases, gloves in glove cases — has roughly a 0.26% chance per opening. That slot then randomly picks among multiple models, finishes, and a wear roll, so a specific high-tier knife is far rarer than 0.26%.
Is it cheaper to open cases or buy the skin directly?
Buying the skin directly is almost always cheaper. The expected value of opening a case sits below the combined cost of the case plus key, which is the built-in house edge. Open only for the experience, not as a way to acquire a target skin.
Why are some cases so expensive?
They were discontinued — removed from the active drop pool — so no new copies enter circulation and supply only shrinks. Early containers like the original CS:GO Weapon Case and eSports 2013 case trade as collectibles, unlike cheap uncapped cases that drop every week.
What is the difference between a case and a souvenir package?
Standard cases are opened with a key and can yield StatTrak items. Souvenir packages drop to viewers during official Majors, cannot be bought as store cases, and every item inside carries tournament stickers and team/MVP context instead of StatTrak.
