It feeds from a 100-round box magazine, deals strong sustained damage with high armor penetration, but it is expensive, heavy, and wildly inaccurate on the move. That combination keeps it out of competitive buys, so it lives mostly in casual lobbies, Arms Race, anti-eco holds, and force-buy meme rounds.
Because the gun sees little serious play, its skins carry low demand. That is the headline for collectors: M249 finishes are among the cheapest paths to a clean-looking, rarely-seen weapon. The model also has a shorter skin list than any rifle, so there is no overwhelming catalog to sort through, and prices stay affordable even at the upper rarities.

What the M249 is and how it plays
The M249 costs $5,200, the highest-priced primary in the game alongside the Negev, which alone explains why it almost never appears in match buys. It is classed as a heavy weapon (the same slot as shotguns), so it slows your movement and ruins accuracy while walking or running. Where it shines is a static hold: planted on an angle with a full 100-round belt, it can wall a chokepoint and shred multiple opponents before reloading. Both sides can purchase it. There is no widely used English nickname; Russian players simply call it пулемёт (machine gun).
Notable and iconic M249 finishes
The M249 O.S.I.P.R. is the model's signature skin, a Half-Life reference (the Overwatch Standard Issue Pulse Rifle) plastered across the receiver, and the one most collectors recognize. M249 Nebula Crusader is the showpiece high-rarity finish, a deep galaxy-and-knight motif that is the closest the gun has to a flagship Covert look. Other recognizable finishes include M249 Aztec, M249 Spectre, M249 System Lock, M249 Emerald Poison Dart, M249 Gator Mesh, M249 Impact Drill and M249 Downtown. Lower-tier sprays like Jungle DDPAT, Contrast Spray and Blizzard Marbleized round out the cheap end.
Float behaviour and wear
M249 skins follow the standard five-exterior float scale (Factory New through Battle-Scarred). The gun's large, mostly flat receiver and barrel shroud make wear easy to read, so painted finishes show scratching clearly as float climbs. There are no float-driven blue-gem or pattern lotteries on the M249 the way the AK Case Hardened has, so condition and StatTrak availability are the main value levers rather than seed hunting. Solid-color and gradient finishes tend to hold up best in higher-wear conditions.
Price tiers and the best value buys
Treat the M249 as a budget collector's pick. Even its rarer finishes trade far below the equivalent rarity on a popular rifle, because match demand is near zero. The cheap floor is occupied by spray-paint and camo finishes that cost pennies in worn conditions. The mid tier covers cleaner designs like Aztec and Spectre. The top of the model is held by O.S.I.P.R. and Nebula Crusader, which still remain inexpensive relative to Covert rifle skins. StatTrak versions exist for a subset and carry a modest premium.
