About Collections
Every skin in CS2 is filed under exactly one collection, shown by a small collection icon on the inspect screen, and that grouping is what determines how the skin drops, what rarity tiers exist around it, and which items it can turn into through a trade-up contract. Collections range from a handful of finishes to dozens, and each one has its own fixed ladder of rarities running from Consumer (white) up to Covert (red), with knife and glove sets sitting in the gold Exceedingly Rare tier.
Collections matter for two practical reasons. First, they control drops: case collections only come out of their matching weapon case (and need a key), map collections drop free at the end of competitive games on those maps, and operation collections were tied to active operations. Second, they control trade-ups: the 10 inputs you feed a contract must share a rarity, and the output is pulled only from the collections those inputs belong to, so knowing a collection's contents is the difference between a profitable contract and a wasted one.
How a collection is sourced
There are several distinct collection sources, and the source decides how you obtain anything in it. Case collections (Chroma, Spectrum, Prisma, Recoil, Kilowatt, the Arms Deal sets, and so on) drop as a sealed case that you must open with a matching key; these are the only collections that contain knives or gloves in the gold Exceedingly Rare tier. Map collections (Dust 2, Mirage, Cache, Cobblestone, Overpass, Italy, Vertigo, Lake, Train, Nuke, Inferno and others) drop free as ordinary weekly/end-of-match drops when those maps are in the pool, with no key required, and they cap at the Covert tier with no knives. Operation collections were earnable during their operation's run via the campaign or drops. The Souvenir versions of map collections only appear inside Souvenir Packages handed out during Majors. The source also sets the price floor: map-collection Consumer and Industrial skins are some of the cheapest items in the game, while sealed case openings are gated by key cost.
Rarity tiers inside a collection
Within any collection, items are ranked by color-coded rarity: Consumer Grade (white), Industrial Grade (light blue), Mil-Spec (blue), Restricted (purple), Classified (pink) and Covert (red). Case collections add the gold Exceedingly Rare tier for knives and gloves, and there is a single Contraband item, the M4A4 Howl, which was pulled from its collection after an art dispute and can no longer drop. Not every collection spans the full ladder; many map collections start at Consumer and top out at Covert, while some case collections start higher. The rarity a skin sits at is fixed by the collection, not by its finish style, which is why the same wear or pattern can be cheap in one collection and expensive in another.
Collections and trade-up contracts
Trade-up contracts run entirely on collection membership. You submit 10 skins of the same rarity, and the contract returns one skin from the next rarity up, chosen from the pool of next-tier items in the collections your 10 inputs came from. Use 10 inputs from one collection and the output is guaranteed to come from that collection's higher tier; mix collections and the odds split across each represented collection. Because Covert is the highest weapon tier, you cannot trade Coverts up into knives, and Exceedingly Rare knives/gloves are never trade-up outputs. The output's float is calculated from the average float of the 10 inputs, so collection knowledge plus float control is how players target specific high-value skins like a particular Classified from a known collection.
Where the value and the demand sit
Demand clusters at two ends. The cheap end is map-collection Consumer and Industrial skins, which trade for cents and exist mostly as trade-up fuel and casual loadout filler. The expensive end is the few collections that house trophy Coverts and high-tier rarities, and these drive most of the collection-level interest. Souvenir items add another premium layer because their value depends on which map collection and which Major they came from, plus the team stickers applied at drop time. For most buyers the practical question is not the whole collection but which single tier they want, then the cheapest acceptable wear within it.
